all i am noticing a great improvement on my breathing when i am given Azithromycin for my upper respiratory tract infection. does anyone have any good results with this antibiotic. the doctors used to give me Avelox, but i read up on it and it is too dangerous , destroys tendons, liver damage. I find Azithromycin for me is better what other great antibiotics if any are there? ?

Hi Anna 8.....
The thing about anti's as you know is that we can't repeat the same type in a 3 month period. Makes sense don't you think? We don't want to build up an immunity to them. And; different anti's are used depending sometimes on the type of infection (if they know what type ; though they generally don't) But; you can't stay with just one type; they should be rotated. That's where a good COPD Action plan comes in. Your meds on it (in the script side of things) are rotated.
The quinlone family of anti's are very good. But..... they can have a bad downside(s) to them and as a matter of fact I've had to stop using one type myself. The last go round was bad.
As for Zitho; yes.... I have found it to be the "kindest" of the anti's I've ever taken. Log time ago I started with what's known as Z Paks and though it's not on my rotation of antibiotics now, I do take it 3 x a week on going.

Ann, I personally also take Azithromycin as a preventative med. I take one a day. Has made a big difference in the number of exacerbations that I have. Knock on wood, the last one I had was in Oct. I usually get one in Feb. and am just holding my breath on this.
As for how it worked for me before I took it for maintenance, I liked it ok. Seemed to do the trick for little infections. My sister just got a script for it today, as a matter of fact, for strepped throat.

I asked my doctor about taking it daily and he said absolutely not. He said it is not advisable to take antibiotics unless you have an infection and then to take them and when I get sick he prescribes kephlex.

Regular continuous use of Azithromycin has been found beneficial for those people who have frequent exacerbations. Not only does this kill many strains of bacteria, but macrolide antibiotics such as azithromycin also appear to have some actual beneficial side effects on the lung tissue. However because there is a risk of the bugs getting used to the azithromycin then patients using this therapy need to use a different family of antobiotic when they do have an exacerbation.
Where a patient does not have serious and frequent exacerbations then such continuous use would indeed be inappropriate.
Regular continuous use of azithromycin is a recent development, with the studies only having been carried out in the last two or three years. I am sure many family doctors are not aware of these studies and would therefore want to avoid regular continuous use.

Chris summarized pretty darn good I think .... I just want to add something.... Zithro has been used for CF (cystic fibrosis) patients and post lung Tx (transplant) people as well I believe, as a preventative for a bit now. Also Chris mentioned it being recent studies etc and Dr's not catching up. He's right but It's not just the GP's and even the ones in the know might be reluctant. I know that I brought it up to my own Respirologist when the initial small study was done. He was familiar with the study (and he reminded me it was a small one) but nevertheless agreed to give it a try for 6 months. It's now 20 mos later and I still take it. But; I had to initiate the discussion. There's "potential" drawbacks to taking the med on-going but isn't there with e'thing? Even our breathing meds. The piece below is a pretty easy and informative read (with links to even more info) for anyone interested Antibiotics (azithromycin) to prevent COPD exacerbations (Review, NEJM)pulmccm.org/2013/review-articles/antibiotics-azithromycin-to-prevent-copd-exacerbations-review-nejm/?utm_source=Email+Updates+from+PulmCCM+Central&utm_campaign=6e0d3aae1f-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email
