As most have heard Leonard Nimoy (Spock) died this morning from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
His granddaughter sent out a Tweet on his account.
Leonard Nimoy 1931-2015
Read: tl.gd/n_1skuhq6
I thought that was nice of her what she said in the PS part of the Tweet

Spock was an important character for me, I was/am a trekkie and he was the one I related too. I don't know how many times I quoted him "it is illogical" and I was called Mrs. Spock many times over the years. I didn't know he had COPD but was saddened when I heard he passed away. He will live on in film.

Sometimes the cynic side of me rises up. According to reports, he quit smoking 30 years ago but was only diagnosed with COPD one year ago and just died with 'end stage.' Just think what impact he would have had if he had been diagnosed even 10 years ago and went public. I have a problem with selling T-shirts although I am sure the Foundation will appreciate the money. Why can't people donate to COPD organizations without always wanting something in return......how about better health? I would rather his family get informational articles in as much of the media as possible and do speaking engagements large and small. One of the reasons COPD organizations have trouble raising funds is that the 'celebrities' hide their diagnosis. I guess you could say they too don't want to deal with the 'stigma' of having been a smoker. Even if one person made a public effort to talk about non-smoking related COPD, it might help reduce some of the overall stigma. Ok, my rant is over.

Like Skate I was so surprised that he had COPD & never spoke out. If he only knew about it for the last year then I can really understand as it is hard to fathom in the very beginning. He and his family must of been so shocked since he had quit over 30 years ago. What scares me is that my sister-in-law called me on the phone and was preaching to me that see-it's ok to smoke as to her that proves that smoking isn't the realy reason behind the illness. She was told she had this disease over 10 years ago and just quit smoking this last Nov when she had a lung attack. She still swears that it is her asthma (why you would smoke when you have asthma? ask her)I have tried to explain about the testing difference between asthma & COPD but she isn't interested. What a terrible addiction smoking is. Education is the only way that people will get it that smoking and environmental issues have such an impact on all of us be we COPDers or not.

stoker - no one will listen until they are ready to hear I did read that Nimoy did an interview a few years ago and wanted to talk about COPD but the interviewer kept asking him questions about Mr. Spock to the point he just gave up.....don't know how true this is.

I am sure Leonard knew he had emphysema way before he announced it. It is a slow progressive disease.
I was diagnosed in 1983 and it was close to 2003 before I felt any of the effects. A person usually has the disease way before they realize it. Doctor just happened to find mine in 3 x-rays in 3 years. The 3rd x-ray was taken 9 months after the 2nd x-ray. That is when the beginning of emphysema showed up.

An interesting writeup: Could Stem Cells Have Saved Leonard Nimoy? www.ipscell.com/tag/leonard-nimoy-copd/It also makes mention of this documentation Nimoy made on stem cells. This is only the trailer and mentions the video should be released soon. The phrase "a documentary film " links to the trailer on Vimeo

Last year a professional pulmonary presentation agreed with this write-up that while more stem cell research is being done, it will be at least 10 more years until we know for sure. Thanks for this link!

I don't actually watch her show but Queen Latifa's talk show is on right before my nightly news so I sometimes see part of it. Her mom is on oxygen, I assume she has COPD and she has been on singing with a choir. etc and just generally looking like a normal person. It is nice to see that, people on O2 need to come 'out of the closet'.
