I use a "pop up blocker" so i don't see pop up ads. However, I keep getting a "banner'" popping up telling me I need to "pay" to be a member of Proboards to stop that banner from popping up. I have never seen this before, is it something new that I need to pay to be a member here now?

No, 8ts just ad's that pop up, what they are saying is: if you dont want pop up ad's to come on you're forum, then yes you have to pay money to stop the ad's. I asked basically the same thing when I first started. You get used to it after a while.

Hi Jarca, Proboards has that on all their forums, it's no cause for concern, if you use a add blocker like I do, just ignore it.

I think my computer environment is similar to yours. I haven't seen the pop-up you refer to yet, but today there was a pop-up within this site which I hadn't seen before. I updated firefox yesterday which may be related to the pop-up. I would be on anger's edge if I received a popup regarding pay from proboards. I don't accept pop-ups of any sort - just ignore doesn't work for me. I'll be researching this via my ad-blocker and/or firefox, OS. I'll let you know if I have some answers.

I searched Proboards help and found the Guide which referred to the pop-up stuff. This is a recent implementation for Blockers. I'm not pleased about this. I'm not sure what the results of the pop-up contain, but it's about revenue so there must be a prompt for one to buy something. Anyway, I'll have to think about this as I absolutely dislike pop-ups. I'll have to test this with my Ad-Blocker turned off for the site. My reply to the discussion was that I'd give an annual donation instead - otherwise "the office is closed." I hope it's a change I can tolerate... support.proboards.com/thread/622449/ad-blockers-on-proboardsNote: Looks like users who are not surprised by this pop-up don''t use an ADBlocker so it's not "new". They're asking us blockers to disable the blocking for them.

thanks for all the replies---i wasn't sure if it was because i've not been on for awhile or what was going on as I never saw it in the past.
I get a 'banner ad' at the bottom, which reading Joanies link I think is this; "Members Logged in members will not be presented with the full screen overlay when loading a page. Instead they will get a bar that floats at the bottom of the screen asking for their support. When the bar is clicked, the overlay that guests see will be displayed, which again can be easily dismissed with one click."
yesterday i was on here for quite awhile & i clicked it a few times & it went away, then would show up again. I was reading posts & skipping around forums so i'm not sure how often it comes back. I understand that Proboards needs money to run this board, but annoying pop ups isn't the way a "rebel' like me will want to pay. i'll have to read it closer if it comes up today---my impression was some hacker had gotten it up & it was a rip off scam; so at least i know it is proboard doing it (it isn't expensive, but i don't like things like this that i would have to give my CC information to pay---very uncomfortable for me to give out info online so i hope they try another way in the future.).... I always have my pop up blocker on so i will try turning off my pop up blocker just to see if ads are annoying on here. other sites i have been on have put their ads on a sidebar so people see them, but they arent annoying pop ups---maybe proboards should do something like that---just my thought on the matter

i'm going to try to keep track & if anyone has suggestions how i can stop it let me know please as i can't seem to ignore it. i tried clicking "Click here to remove banner ads from this forum." at the bottom of page but that doesn't stop it.
4pm banner ad across bottom just came up; does anyone else get this===
a banner appears on bottom of page that covers the options down there. has red stop sign with hand held up inside of it... then reads; "Can we talk? We work hard at Proboards to provide the best possible communities. Please support us!"then has ^ to click click on ^ opens a pop up page with weird looking guy on 1/2 and the other 1/2 has option boxes to click giving a choice to click 1. disable ad blocker 2. get proboards+. 'proboard+ members get no ads' or 3. i'm sorry, i'll do it next time.
if click 1. i had 7 ads in about 1/2 hour so far if click 2. takes me to 'store' & cost to join proboards+ is $2.99 a month & only accepts a credit card ---no debit or any other way.
I can ignore/keep clicking "sorry i'll do it next time"---not sure what it will do if i ignore---& at this point i don't know how often it comes up. it's not a huge deal, i'm more curious that i'd never gotten it before & i thought when i joined as a member it said this was a free board; so just kind of confused if it's only me getting this (DUH) I don't know how to make a suggestion to Proboards, but i still think if they need their ads to show, instead of pop ups, they should do a 'side bar' that people can click if they want to see that ad.
okay, my "computer illiteracy" is done for the day; but any suggestions how i can remove this ad i'd love

4:40pm the banner came back, BUT!!! this time i ignored it. a weird pop up with a Monster saying "error" showed up on my screen & i clicked the x to close that (that was REALLY ODD) THEN a few seconds later the banner went away on it's own.....
so i'm going to try ignoring it as some of you suggested & hope it 'gets the hint' and goes away forever.
still at the weird monster pop up---that one got me to jump in my chair

I don't use an ad blocker on this forum. The ads keep it free.
The ads don't bother me. They are at the top. I don't pay any attention to them. I think there might be some at the bottom. I don't even know.

Proboards provide a forum for free to anyone who wants one. The only way they get paid for this service by selling the advertising that appears on the forum.
A forum can be made add free, by buying credits. I had my forum add free for a bit, but can't remember all the details. I think the credits are $1.00 each and each credit gives you so many add free days.
I can't remember whether any member can do this, or if it is only the admin.

If members just ignore the pop-up, how does this provide payment for service? Paying for the service is not the issue for me as long as I pay once and they go away. Anyhow, this isn't something I want to spend my energy on.
But if this opens up to hourly, daily, weekly etc pop-ups... The payment method is? The blocker I use mentions pausing the blocker, but after spending an hour or so this a.m. investigating, I couldn't figure how to do this. I'm hesitant to pause if I'm not sure about how to re-set.

If you are using Ad Block you can click on the icon at the top of your browser and a drop down will tell you to disable for this site or enable for this site.

So when I disable my Blocker for this site, there won't be a bunch of ads appearing asking me to buy something. And I won't see the "Can we talk..." pop-up (Grrrr! I don't do cutesy when serious business is at hand.) I'll give it a try - thanks...

So far, I see what disabling my ad blocker pops up. We'll see how it goes, but it appears that the displays at the top and the bottom of a page won't be distracting. Hope this is it!

what is "whitelisted" domains?----is that where i would put this site so ads show, but all other sites will still have ads blocked? oh---I have "adblock plus" & i'm willing to try disabling it for this site to see what happens, i just don't want to disable it for other sites accidentally. I am such a computer moron that it's scary to change anything, but i'm trying because i love this board & want to support it, but can't afford the monthly fee (i thought it was 2.99 a month (a gallon of mild a month) , but 6.99 a month! would be a bit much for me (I know it probably sounds silly that i worry about such small amounts, but i do run a VERY tight budget) i'm going to try just clicking the "enable this site" & hope it works without affection other sites....otherwise i will have to try to figure out what that "whitelist" thing is. fingers crossed ....

Great - no harm, no foul. Those of us affected by the recent pop-ups appear to be okay now. The top and bottom displays aren't intrusive - thank goodness.

I guess a white list would be ones you allow ads on.
I just use the 'disable on this site' or 'enable on this site' on all the sites I go to. Some are disabled and some or not.
Some sites won't let you read the articles unless you disable ad block. I hate that. I like to pick and choose.
