What are the causes of COPD besides smoking? I just remembered this week that I did smoke one pack a very long time ago, when I was young.
How are you tested for COPD?
Thank you for this info.

I assume many things can cause copd as my older sister passed away from copd in 2009 (i was diagnosed in 2010). Environment must be a factor as we were raised in a home where our parents didn't smoke, no smoking was allowed in the house (my mom was allergic to the smoke). Also, there is a hereditary factor, called "Alpha 1 antitrypsin"; I was tested for it due to my sister and was negative, so we must have gotten it elsewhere. (i was a heavy smoker, but that doesn't explain my sister) according to this article they are finding more people with copd that never smoked that originally thought; " studies suggest the disease is much more common among non-smokers than previously believed. Between 10 and 20 percent of people with COPD have never smoked. A recent large study of Canadian residents found that non-smokers make up almost 30 percent of those with COPD." www.healthline.com/health/copd/non-smoker
