, again. I've been off the boards for awhile... On Tues. 12-4, my Mom had a major exacerbation and was intubated for 8 days. They have weaned her from the vent (on Wed. 12-12). Her vitals seem to be doing fairly well, however, she is really not herself. The Dr. told us that she has Steroid (or ICU) Narcosis. Has anyone had any experience with this? Mom is agitated and kind of mean. It really isn't her personality at all. Its kind of scary. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lynn

I was diagnosed in 1993 and spent 3 weeks in the hospital. I had massive doses of steroids during that time and I too had the steroid narcosis. I was told I was hateful and very weepy during that time. Not myself at all. The dr. assured my family I would come off it after the steroids got out of my system and I did. My dr. called it a steroid high. Now when I have to be even on a burst the steroids make me super hyper. Given time your Mom will probably be ok. Be patient with her.-------sandytx

I agree that Sandy is right in what that is. When I had to go to the ER, my daughter went with me. After they gave me the "big burst" shot, I became aggitated, impatient and started talking about getting dressed and getting out of there and saying how the table I was on felt like a marble slab, etc. etc. and on and on. By the time they let me go, I know my daughter was probably happier than I about getting out of there. I even got up and started to pull back the curtain to shout to a nurse or doctor that I was ready to leave. That wasn't me at all. I am very non-aggressive. Anyway, I think after the steroid wears off, she will return to her normal self...Joyce

I don't know what was done that caused me to act bad but something. I don't remember it because I was on what they call amnesia drugs but my husband has told me how awful I was. I am not like that either.
Joyce, that is strang, huh? I don't have much of a mean bone in my body. You have to do something pretty awful to upset me.

Good Morning Lynn, I think I can shed some light as we just went through it with Jackie. I was so frustrated as I did not know what to do as staff kept saying it is common with people who are stuck in I.C.U. It wasn't good enough answer for me. I asked that phyc get involved to overcome it. They prescribed a mild sedative that was given PRN (patient requests nurse) then we changed it to 3 times daily every 8 hours as counting on nurses to administer was not a guarantee. It helped tremendously in helping Jackie settle down.
The lack of time schedule, the constant commotion, lights stay on 24/7. I started bringing Jackie a newspaper in the morning. Each time I stopped in I told her the day, time of day. And starting going back to let her know when it was bed time and saying good night to help keep her body clock in order.
One of the many things learned as a caregiver, more to share as we go along.

Thank you all so much for your support and help in understanding all of this.
Mom went back on the vent on Friday. Dr. said that her breathing muscles just aren't strong enough yet, although she was keeping her O2 at 95% and above. Her blood pressure kept shooting up as well as her heart rate.
They haven't really told us if her muscles will get strong enough to support her breathing again. She is 74 years old.
She has a living will, and has made it very clear that she does not want to live forever on the vent, so we're kind of just in the "wait and see" mode. I don't want to have false hope, and I am somewhat prepared, but I don't want to be entirely pessimistic, either.
If you pray, please pray for my Mom. Pat Wise. Thank you all again.
Lynn

So Sorry about your Mom Lynn, it is so hard when our loved ones are ill, you and your Mother are certainly in my thoughts. It really is good that she has a living will, takes some of the pressure and decision making off you. Please keep us updated, and do take care.

Another Update!
Mom weaned successfully off the vent, on Thurs. 12-20. She seems to be doing fairly well. She moved out of ICU on Friday afternoon.
We had a chance to celebrate Christmas! (Nothing like doing all of your Christmas shopping on Christmas eve, at Walgreens!!!)
I have a photo, but don't know how to get it on here......
The only problem now, is, she is not strong enough to stand, and walk yet. We have her accepted into a short-term rehab facility, as soon as she is released from the hospital. Hopefully, this afternoon.
Friends and Prayers are wonderful. I know that I may not have my Mom for long, but I had a fantastic Christmas present this year!!! Hope you all had a good one, too!
This is a very special place to be able to come and talk.
Thank you all.... And Blossom, its good to see you back on "the boards"!!!

Enjoyed the pictures Lynn. Glad your Mom stayed off the Vent the last time. Really heartwarming pictures. Hope you Mom goes slowly and should be okay.
Best of luck to you and your family in the New Year.

Mom has been moved to a rehab facility to get her up and about again. She became very weak and can't quite get her legs working.
For someone who had only a 10% chance of survivng, she is making wonderful progress.
Thank you all for your help and encouragement during this rough time. It has been a wild Christmas for our family.
Thanks again, Lynn

Thank you all for you kind comments, advice and encouragement!!!
Mom is scheduled to go home from rehab on Friday! She is still fairly weak, but getting stronger every day.
I know she is ready to be at home, after over a month. And the staff at rehab is probably just as ready for her to leave!!!!!
I will still be around, checking on everyone, and asking still more questions.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Lynn
