I've found that I have to practice the pursed lip breathing everyday when I do my exercises and then when I get short of breath it just kinda kicks in for me. Before I started practicing it I couldn't do it very long and thought I was going to pass out from not enough O2. I also have massage therapy to release the diaphragm. Here is a web site about it there are many sites but this one has a pretty good explanation of how it works. I had to tell my massage therapists about it as they didn't know about it themselves however my physiotherapist knew. www.massagetherapycanada.com/operations/breath-of-life-2395

I really liked that article Gerald. I found during my stressful days that if I drink enough water and swim or walk I can deal with life much better. My pulmonary specialist told me about that it's nice to see it written here to share with everyone.

Everybody is different. I went to 3 days a week working only Mon, Wed & Fri with the day in-between to recover as I also suffer from chronic pain. I was lucky enough that my workplace could accommodate. In Canada I believe there is a one time parcel of money you can receive for COPD disability I have not looked into this but it is there. Think about your general health and how you feel everyday before making a decision you can't reverse. I also consulted my physical therapist from my COPD classes and the nurses there. That is how I came up with how I handle work. They think I should not be working at all but I would lose my mind if I had to stay home with the hubby everyday.

I also know first hand all about migraines. A lot of folks out there suffer from them. Different things trigger them for each person. It's a complex issues. hope that they find a cure soon.

I'm with you on that one David & I try not to think about it. In the beginning I was always so worried that I was going to have one. I had to stop fussing over it but it is good to know what one is as that is how I got diagnosed. I have learned situational awareness of my environment plays a big role in what is going on with my breathing. Thanks for posting that Gerald it is a good reminder.

Congrats on quitting. I am going into my 5th year now. I noticed how much weight I gained immediately and contributed my bad breathing to that. I think you should ask your doctor to send you to a pulmonary specialists and go through the exercise program that is offered if you live in Canada; I am sure it is offered in the US too but it will cost you. You will get stronger and learn how to breath correctly and it makes such a difference. You will also find others in the program who are struggling with this disease and you will get correct advice from the physio therapist and the nurse/s in the program. Keep on trucking you are on the right path.

If you type this into Google you can get even more info backing up that article: COPD LLN or Gold standard Thanks for posting that Gerald. My pulmonary specialist thought I had a heart problem at first until he ruled it out so some doctors are paying attention out there.

Here I had been worrying about the results of my breathing tests; chest X-ray and MRI and there was no reason to. My pulmonary specialist told me that I went up 10 points which surprised him too as most people he sees do not move up the scale but down. I looked at my chest X-ray with him and could see that the mass in the right lung was way smaller and the bottoms of my lungs weren't as scrunched up as before. I attribute it to positive attitude, exercise; proper breathing, trying to eat right (), losing weight, health supplements, physio and massage therapy. I am trying this new thing where they release your diaphragm so it doesn't stay stuck. Here it link that will explain it better than I can: www.massagetherapycanada.com/content/view/2395/132/ I know that I will never lose this disease but I am truly trying to learn to live with it and not let it dominate my life and keep me from living. Early diagnosis is so important. I spent a year getting my head wrapped around what I had done to myself and decided that I can't fix the damage but I can try to keep it from getting worse. I am fortunate that I do not get the flu often as so many folk do. I don't get the flu shot because when I have I end up in the hospital and that was even before my diagnosis for COPD. I have had my pneumonia shot and shingles though. I understand that there is a newer pneumonia shot out and I will speak with my regular doctor about this when I see him next. It has really been a struggle to get my breathing under control as I suffer from chronic neck pain due to a car accident years ago. Another MRI coming in September for that. It is something that I have to consciously think about everyday so that I don't breath shallow which in turn contributes to my migraine headaches and chronic neck pain. It is truly amazing how everything connects to each other in the body. Trying to work on my reaction to stress is another whole separate battle. Don't know if I will ever win the war there. Just thought I would share these happy thoughts with you all.

Taking a wee break from the golf course, Rory Mcllroy drives his new Mercedes into an Irish gas station. An attendant greets him in a typical Irish manner, unaware who the golf pro is... "Top o’ the mornin to ya" As Rory gets out of the car, two tees fall out of his pocket. "What are those things, laddie?" asks the attendant. "They're called tees," replies Rory. "And what would ya be usin 'em for, now?" inquires the Irishman. "Well, they're for resting my balls on when I drive," replies Rory. "Aw,Jaysus, Maryan' Joseph!" exclaims the Irish attendant. "Those fellas at Mercedes think of everything..

Presently, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore every day, I go to the street and tell a passerby what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night before and what I will do after. I give them pictures of my wife, my daughter, my dog and me gardening and spending time in my pool. I also listen to their conversations and tell them I love them. And it works: I already have 3 people following me: 2 police officers and a psychiatrist

Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. He was stiff-legged and walking slowly. One student said to his friend: "I'm sure that poor old man has Peltry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that." The other student says: "No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks slowly and his legs are apart, just as we learned in class." Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him, "We're medical students and couldn't help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?"
The old man said, "I'll tell you, but first you tell me what you two fine medical students think." The first student said, "I think it's Peltry Syndrome." The old man said, "You thought - but you are wrong." The other student said, "I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome." The old man said, "You thought - but you are wrong." So they asked him, "Well, old timer, what do you have?"
The old man said, "I thought it was GAS - but I was wrong, too!"

I'll see how it goes when I go there on the 20th. I try to stay away from hospitals and have told him that if he were in a nice home I could visit him even if he was getting IV therapy because they do not send you out unless it is actually life threatening.

Thanks guys for listening to me. Gerald they are evaluating him physically because he actually is of sound mind he just has always made poor decisions in his life about the women he associates with. It will be up to the occupational people to decide when he can return home or not. Until then he is stuck in the hospital until she is cleared. And yes David I had to chuckle when she said that she didn't know how she got them. I clean his bank account out as best I can so that he only has enough money to pay bills and buy necessities but I had put and extra thou in there because I just bought his new W/D and wasn't sure of the total cost. He took that extra thou out and gave it to her and there isn't a thing I can do. If wasn't such a personal horrible situation it would be amusing and I do shake my head a lot. Take care.

Have wanted my brother who is 85 to be in a home because he has had 3 strokes and cannot use his right hand and has drop leg on his right foot. He is in the hospital right now because of bladder infection but is in there every 3 weeks to 3 days. I have complained to Fraser Health & the hospital in Chilliwack. Finally he is getting a Dr. that is actually assessing him to see if 4 times Fraser Health a day is enough. It isn't but no one will listen. The lady down the street that stucco's get nose in all the time has scabies is not allowed near him for a month she calls him her boy friend she is 7 years younger than me at 56 there is to bloody way I would call a 85 year old sick man my boy friend yuk. She gets money from him all the time and there is nothing we can do about it since he actually has a sane mind. So now our family is finally able to step in and fix it since she is not allowed to be near her. I am hoping this goes well. I will not be on for awhile now as I work & need to fix this too. Good breathing to all I will miss you.

You are right Gerald they assess patients with diabetes or obesity for sleep apnea but people with chronic pain or COPD have to ask for it here in BC. I find that it comes up in conversations with others more and more and I am truly surprised the number of people I know who suffer from it. I never would of guessed it.
