I've searched everywhere online to try and find a viable answer to my issue. I was diagnosed in late aug. with stage 4 copd. I am on the no. 2 of air flow from my concentrator. Been feeling fairly good with the 2 inhalers I use and doing my breathing exercises. Here's my problem. I live with someone who smokes. I realize the quick answer is they need to quit or they need to go outside regardless of the weather. Life doesn't always work that way. We've waited long time to be able to be together as much as possible. That's our JOY even if neither of us says a word or if we are working from home on our computers. Still we are in the same room and for us, that's the life we hoped for and worked hard for. I hope this doesn't sound silly but even if it does, this is the way it is. There's a fan in the window blowing OUT and CN sits 5 inches from it with the cigarette pointed towards it. Is this the perfect solution, not sure, but its the best we could come up with , short of me being inside all alone all day and most of the evening ( not much of a life) and them being outside in the heat, cold ,rain and wind.
I quit smoking 8 months ago and I realize its a miracle. I have had no desire at all for even 1.
So here we are and I just needed to say it. CN has cut back some and is vaping half the time so better than it was. I know many who have COPD say they themselves are unable to quit and I am so sorry thats how it is for them.
What I'd like is your honest opinion of 2nd hand smoke- even a small amount and how it will or wont effect me.
thanks so much for giving me a place to talk so I don't have to keep this all bottled up inside.

It will affect you big time....Talked to my respiratory therapist and even 3rd hand smoke is not good...I think your p should definitely go outside to smoke....When I quit 11 years ago hubby was smoking yet but he would go outside out of respect for me...He is gone now and his smoking was not good for him either as he also had COPD....I'm on oxygen now for 6 years so please stay away from the smoke.

Barb is right. The smoke is deadly. If I even get a breath of second had smoke my chest starts to tighten up immediately. As you lungs get a bit worse they will become even more sensitive to the irritants.
COPD is all about delaying any damage, any irritants as long as possible.
If that person can't quit then the two of you will need to find an arrangment
where that person can go isolate themselves to do their smoking. And that smoke will linger so it needs to be a place that you do not go. Because that is the type of stuff that will worsen your COPD and can eventually kill you.

What I know for sure is that very close friends are hard to come by. To me, it's all your call -ALONE . Do you have a room in your place for Smokers only - if so sign on the door, comfortable lounge chair, (one of those comfortable leather lounge chairs, feet up), nice ash tray, little table outside the smoker's door with munchies . It's doable without being a nag. I''ve seen those mask-like things you can put over your nose, mouth.
Do what you can without messing up a good friendship. You may need to have a monthly cleaner who specializes in dusty room, nicotine mirrors. We all have had list of tips I don't know when, why, how i stopped for today. Nohing dramatic!!

Dear Sonny - everyone has made some valid points and I am not sure I have much to add. Just wanted you to know that I read your post and feel your pain.
Please remember that oxygen is combustible. It will increase any flame that it is near. So there is a potential physical safety issue here.
Have CN check into stop smoking aides when s/he is open to it. New drugs and patches available. Plus many use hypnosis and acupuncture. Stopping smoking would be a benefit to you both. Physically, financially and emotionally.
But only you know what is right for you. Our interpersonal ties and connections are so important.
I will keep you in my thoughts and π. Keep posting...

Sonny, I very much understand what you're going through. My hubby still smokes and even when I'm on oxygen. But my enclosed porch has a fan in the window to pull the smoke out! There's more smoke outside smelling than inside . I think what everyone told you is very good. In my case, after 3 and 1/2 years I picked up again, after that, I quit again for several months. Then back and forth all the time! I just started smoking again after 17 months, I just keep trying all the time, but I just can't seem to stop smoking no matter what I've tried and done. I'm so d**n addicted to cigarettes it's like a heroin addict when it comes to me and cigarettes I don't know why I do it but I do and I just keep trying to quit everyday. I used to be hard on myself about it and I figured that was not good either so I stopped being hard on myself and I mind my own business and I just do whatever I do and it sucks but at least I'm honest. My mom also has a fan in the window in her bathroom and my brother smokes and the fan in the bathroom with the door shut and then he sprays this organic spray so it doesn't bother my mom and you cannot tell somebody smokes in that house no matter what I don't know how she does it but you cannot smell smoke. My mom put the fan inside the window with the storm window in front so when he's done smoking he just pushes the window down and keeps the fan outside do you know what I mean? I'm sure you will come to some kind of compromise that you feel good about I am nobody to tell you what to do, but if you have anything you'd like to ask me I'm here to tell you or answer your questions but I'm no doctor or anything like that. Take care, Love Gail xx

Sony. You do have a dilemma. I quit drinking 44 years ago this month. I quit smoking 12 years ago and I found the quitting smoking much harder than quitting drinking. No I don't miss either of them cuz they both they both wanted me dead..The thing is too slow this disease down. By quitting smoking now We smoking or somebody else smoking near you accelerates the progression rapidly. The main thing one can do to slow the progression is to stop smoking. I've been a member here since the beginning and have seen many who either smoked or lived with someone else who smoked. Many of them didn't make it five years. We even had a case wear a member smoked on 02 and when she woke up would put her O2 on and lite up the sprark from the lighter followed the 02 into her lungs and she died 3 days late .I rest my case.

Good going sonnygirl. I really think you should just focus on yourself when it comes to smoking. Based on my "umpteen" years of research, it's up to you. It sounds that you folks have done what you can to reach a level of a little here and a little there. I wouldn't fret over it. Someday.....

Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond and for your honest opinions.
We will continue to do the best we can to keep the smoke either outside or headed that way with the exhaust fan that's in the window. Perhaps in time there will be less and less smoke and in the mean time I will stay as healthy as possible in every other way I can.
It was nice to be able to just say what is real in my life to people and not just talk in my own head.
I'm praying for all of us and for a cure to this and all other Diseases..
thanks again.
