Spike - I'm so glad your son came through the surgery o.k. I know how tiring it can be traveling back and forth to the hospital every day. When doing that, you never seem to eat well and take care of yourselves. I pray your son will have a speedy recovery and be home with you and your family real soon. Take good care.

. Hi there. Thanks for asking about the details of my son.
My son's 10 hour surgery was last Tuesday. They installed 2 steel rods down his back. One rod is 22 cms long and the other is 25 cms long. They could only correct 40%-50% curve in his spine. More importantly, they have stopped his spine from collapsing, and forcing him to be in a wheel chair the rest of his life. Thus, we'll accept 40%-50% "curve correction" - with a smile (to keep in out of a wheel chair the rest of his life). During the operation, they couldn't stop some wild bleeding. Thus, the specialists used 8 units of blood instead of expected 4 units of blood. Appreciate the many who give their blood every year. Without your donations, my son would have lost his life on the table.
I'm currently at the hospital (with my son) and taking a little snack break. A nurse is currently at his bedside. Recovery is going "as expected" - with some ups and downs. He's a head in some areas but behind in other recovery checklist areas. Since his surgery, he's pulled out 3 IVs. Thus, mandatory 24/7 bedside care is needed. His stomach is starting to allow semi solid foods today. Dry Cheerios by hand (like common finger food) is his favorite snack. His 2 x wound tubes are still draining. Today, he's now sitting up and asking to go home. We are expected to be in the hospital for another 4 days.
Many thanks for your support and prayers. Keep them coming - it is working...
thank you.

Update:
As each day goes by, more and more tubes and monitors are removed from my son’s body. His stomach is now “online”, his wound drain tubes were removed and almost healed up, his lungs are clear (meaning, no pneumonia) and no external signs of infection. Thumbs up across all major checklist items.
Yesterday, my son walked 2 rounds “around the block” (sort of speaking) with an adult supporting his under arms. Unlike other kids, he didn’t go from standing beside his bed, to a wheel chair to walking. He went directly from bed to high speed walking (dragging each supporting adult beside him). Since my son passed the turtles on the hallway’s straight runs (sort of speaking), the doctors decided that “today is the day”. Sometime late this afternoon / near dinner time, he’ll be released from the hospital. Until then, my wife is scheduling specialized home care with our in-house medical support staff. Bandage changes, special physical exercises (mostly for back and legs), special diet (to further excel healing), etc. etc. all need to be formally booked. And, a special hospital bed must be installed in the middle of our living room as well. He’s not suppose to do any stairs (where his bedroom is located) for the next 4-8 weeks. Physical strength and balance concerns.
We're not out of the burning woods yet but in the short distance, we do see hope. Hope that our son will soon be home. And, soon be playing on his feet like other normal boys.
I want to thank everyone for your prayers and personal support.
Thank you.

Thanks for the inquire about my son. Yes. My son is doing better and better each day. Although age 14, he's the physical size of many 10 year olds (mostly due to his other disabilities). Currently, he's watch a DVD and "signing away". He loves Greese movie the best. Soon, my son will need to start physical theropy. Bending over to touch his toes, leaning backwards and leaning from side to side. A few more days of healing, then onto formal body movements / stretches - to allow his new steel rods to "settle in". Hopefully, we can get my son outside and walking soon. I'm sure he'll like the outside fresh air - as compared to being indoors all day long. And, his 3-wheel peddle bike is missing him as well.
Thanks for asking (and praying) for him..... Much appreciated....

That's wonderful news Spike. I'm so glad your son is improving. I'll bet once he's outside, he'll improve even quicker. I've heard it said that children heal more quickly than adults. Please keep us up-to-date on his progress.

Update:
Today (3.5 months later), my son is doing great. He can walk, lightly jog, body bend, climb stairs, do driveway hockey slap shots and do many other body movements a normal boy can. Only thing he cannot do (for the rest of his life) is play contact sports. Like hockey, foodball or non-contact sports that have high risk of falling. For example, non-contact baskeball and volley ball. Doing a belly flop or landing from a high jump is bad on his back as well. Overall, his back operation was a great success. No side effects and NO complications afterwards. In the end, this 10 hour operation kept him out of wheel chair the rest of his life.
Many thanks to all - for providing your prayers and personal support.
Much appreciated!!!!
