Anyone with copd/emphysema should use caution when having general anesthesia during surgery. I had surgery last month and went into crisis because the drugs have a very serious effect on the lungs. I went into crisis arrest.
Of interest , I have terminal cancer of the Bladder which has spread to the glands. I really don't know how long I have yet. I'm back and forth to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Fla. The reason I'm terminal is there is no treatment for me; Let me explain,
I was told I can't have surgery because of my lungs condition, He said I would not survive the surgery; Next I had Prostate cancer 9 years ago and had 43 rounds of radiation so I'm told I'm over the limit for radiation so this is out. I'm now told I can not have any Chemotherapy that's available because all of the drugs being used today will not only destroy the cancer cells but will destroy the good cells also; He said my lungs don't have any good cells to give up. This has to be done under general anesthesia. This means I have no treatment available for me. My only hope is a trial but I learned it's almost impossible to get in a trial but I am trying. I've been in contact with some major cancer centers without success.
Anyway I thought the lung connection is important so when ever possible have a SPINAL.
Best wishes Al

Al, thank you for posting this information and I hope with all my heart that you will be accepted by a trial in the very near future. You provide this forum with a wealth of information and we need you to continue to do so.
Take care

Al, I have had Recurring Bladder cancer since 2000. I also had Prostate cancer in 2005 with 43 radiation treatments for that. My COPD was very severe when my Cancer started and I have had about BCG chemo treatments, And 6 other chemo treatments that I can't remember the name of. I would get a 2nd opinion about the Chemo. I have a cysto every 3 months and have gone 6 months cancer free this time. I have the cancer cauterized in the office if its not too big but sometimes I have to go into the hospital and I get a spinal for that. Good Luck in whatever you do.

Thanks for that info. I will find out about it.
My cancer is mussel invasive , not sure what that means . I do hope the treatment you are having would work for me and I'm glad you are having success with it. Can you find out what the other drug is ?
Thanks Al

Al, The name of the other Chemo is Mitomycin. Like the BCG this is put into the bladder and left for about 2 hours. You try move around to be sure the inside of the bladder is covered by these meds. I go to a different Urologist next week as my regular one retired and I sure dread being scoped by someone new.
