Was at a local hardware store last night to buy some grass seed. Needed 25 lbs of mixed `general grade` seed. I found the seasonal section in the store and noticed a large simple packaged 25 lbs grass seed. I also seen bulk loading by weight grass seed bins as well. Since I didn't know the difference, I asked the sales lady (who looked 18-20 years old) to help me compare each. She pulled up their hidden labels and they seem to be similar mixtures. re: 40% sun, 40% shade, 20% thick coverage type seeds. Then, I asked her which method is the better buy? re: Buy the factory large packaged 25 lbs bag or buy bulk at 25 lbs? She immediately looked at me like I was the Zombie. Seriously... She didn't know how to calculate price per lbs for each bag (assume I bought 25 lbs of either). After showing her how to calculate on her hand held calculator, I then asked her what math do they teach in schools these days. She said, Calculus, inverted fractions and compound integers. And, Roman Numbers. Yet, none of that stuff helps in the real world today.... Sad. Very sad.

It's very sad. Im not very good with math at all. I can figure it all out in my head, but I can't sit down and do it on paper, I always did it in my head. E en in School when we were suppose to do subtraction and plus. I would put the answers down after figuri g out in my head. They wanted me to show on paper how I did my subtractions but I just couldn't do it I just couldn't understand takeaways on paper but in my head I could add it all up and then subtract and then come up with the answer. I guess because when it came to homework my dad was very strict and back then and the day when I was in school my teachers were very very strict back then they hit us if we didn't do it correctly. So needless to say I was fearful of any adult trying to teach me. But I seem to get along okay through life when I owned my store I hired a bookkeeper I could have done all my own bookkeeping but he could not understand my way of bookkeeping oh well

The lack of understanding, in a lot of younger peoplem of simple mathmatics is a major concern. Inability to compare options, costs, make change, calculate the total bill is frightening. Making money is not half as hard as holding onto it!! Especially if the person you are dealing with can count and you can't!!
I believe part of this comes from the almost total reliances on credit / debit cards and never having to count out the money. No one seems to equate the swiped of the card with how many hours it is takes to make what you have just spent.
