John and David Thanks for the nice welcome! I had some questions about exercise..I just moved, so my little place is like hoarder's heaven right now...a mess, but I'm digging away at it, taking frequently rest breaks as I get a bit overheated and breathless..it's also hot of course which doesn't help.. I'm on Vancouver Island, and moved to my current place because I love the beach (2 blocks away!) and last night walked down there (slight incline on the way back) had to stop frequently, heat, humidity, etc just a killer, as well as the COPD...is there any exercise program that a person in our condition is recommended to do? Can't/don't want to join a gym...any suggestions? My only idea was to keep walking, and it would improve a little bit at a time...is that true or am I just dreaming? Thanks!

Welcome wendig! Very pleased to see that you found us. Most of us have experienced your depression and anxiety and would be more than willing to share our experiences. I was fortunate enough to attend a Pulmonary Rehab program for 6 weeks. When I checked there are several listed in Vancouver. You could contact one near you and inquire about enrollment. Mine was an exercise program 2 times a week and also education classes. On the front page of this site the facilities are listed but here is the link to them www.copdcanada.ca/Pulmonary%20Rehabilitation%20Facilities%20for%20COPD%20in%20Canada.htmPlease visit often and do not hesitate to ask any questions you might have.

I can't be of much help. Walking didn't cut it for me. I am sure it helps other people. I was going downhill fast over the past year so I joined a Wellness Program at the hospital. Cost $30 a month. I go 5 times a week (Mon thru Fri) and exercise for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. It's a cardiac/pulmonary program. They have everything needed to exercise with. I can tell a big difference.
I went to the Pulmonary class back in 2006 and exercised for about a year. I quit going but started back this past May. I realize now it's forever.
