Morphologic Response of the Pulmonary Vasculature to Endoscopic Lung Volume ReductionI did not copy the article here as it is quite length with charts etc. Basically it looked at the effects of LVR on the remaining lungs, heart and vascular system. Overall the conclusion seems to incidate the Volume reduction allows more room for the heart and lungs to work. The Pumonary vascular system increases to draw the increase volume from the remaining lung capacity. It is quite technical, but worth a read of you have the time. It is good to see followup on the deeper affects of these procedures to verify they do not have massive negative side affects on other parts of the body. I'll have to go back and read it again. Removing poorly functioning lung tissue to allow remaining tissue to expand was always the goal when Lung Vol Reduction Surgery was first done (Nett) but over time the results let it fall to the side and non-invasion various trials started up. There are still mixed results about Endoscipic trials in spite of what Europe says. Other articles are concerned about the shunting to other areas of remaining lung tissue that alters the ventilation/perfusion aspect. I don't think anyone yet has come up with the magic bullet. Actually the original resection surgery is coming back in favor as a treatment. All of this is my humble opinion

My Doctor told me that I can't have Lung Reduction Surgery because the emphysema was through out both lungs and there was nothing good to leave. That was a real Bummer!!
