I am posting a couple of links here that people may want to take a look at. The articles are quite technical and I found them a bit of a challenge. Primary reason for this thread is to give people something to think about. The first article: links Saturated fats to increased inflamation leading to type 2 Diabeties and metabolic syndrom. The phrase that caught my eye was " fats trigger inflammation through macrophages’ IRE1alpha pathway"
The second article: talks about IRE1alpha pathways being linked to mucus production in the airways. Other articles have mentioned "macrophages" being tied to inflammation in the lungs. And this article mentions "Airway diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis (CF) are characterized by chronic inflammation and hypersecretion of mucins."
SO
If, after a meal out "on one of our deviations from our healthy diet" you find that you are coughing up more mucus this may offer an explanation. They are not investigating this (as far as I know) and there isn't any direct science behind it. But; it may be something to watch and to fill in one of the answers to the "why's" is this occuring. If nothing else lets us know what to expect when go for that double cheese burger!! This link covers Saturated Fat ‘Short-Circuits’ Immune Cells To Trigger Inflammation www.ucsf.edu/news/2016/03/401906/saturated-fat-short-circuits-immune-cells-trigger-inflammationThis link covers The ER stress transducer IRE1β is required for airway epithelial mucin production www.nature.com/mi/journal/v6/n3/full/mi2012105a.html
