This is encouraging to see but it is a little short on details. We can proabably accept that they have an accomplishment but it is hard to determine exactly what level they have achieved. ---------------------------------------------- China scientists repair lungs with stem cells Published February 13, 2017 12:38pm China scientists have recently made a major breakthrough in the clinical experiment in repairing the lungs with stem cells. This was done by a research team from the Stem Cell Engineering Center of the Translational Chinese Medicine in the Shanghai East Hospital affiliated to the Shanghai Tongji University. This clinical experiment is mainly based on an interstitial fibrosis lung patient. According to the research team, the clinical experiment has a significant curative effect on the patient by stem cells instead of the traditional medical treatment. "We need an air-driven pipe brush to extract the cells. We have cultivated the cells outside the body to re-enforce them. We used these cells as seeds for proliferation outside the body and make them cells for therapeutical purposes," said Ren Tao, chief physician of the department of respiration medicine of the Shanghai East Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Tongji University. Those cells are cultivated from stem cells extracted from the patient. They can repair the tissues of the lungs without any rejection reactions, thus realizing the purpose of using the organ itself to re-generate and repair its own organ. The research project started five years ago and now the research team has obtained a number of patents at home and the results have been published in the top medical journal "Nature". "In the area of regenerative medicine, there is actually no real experience or research of repair such large visceral organs to realize its regeneration, apart from the area of cornea and skin regeneration. We are now the first institute to have implemented its regeneration of the cells in the lungs and repaired their tissues," said Zuo Wei, a researcher of the stem cell regeneration research team and also a professor of the Shanghai Tongji University. — Reuters www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/599334/scitech/science/china-scientists-repair-lungs-with-stem-cells
