For those of you who know John O ...... I just heard that he'd been admitted to the hospital on the 1st with a collapsed lung but it sounds as if he's doing O.K. all things considered. John has helped me a few times with some information (as I'm sure he has with many of you as well). He also wrote a piece awhile back for our main website for Newly Diagnosed COPDer's. If you would like to read it ..... www.copdcanada.ca/between_copders.htmPlease keep him in your hearts and prayers and if anyone hears anything further, would you please post it. TY

I read y'day, and I'm sure his brother won't mind my posting it here,
"JohnO, my brother, continues to improve. he's still in hospital, still with a tube into his lung--which may come out tomorrow. He's been up to walk several times (on 6L), and his spirits are strong. He's not out of the woods yet, but things are looking much brighter, due in no small part, I'm sure, to all of your good wishes. Thanks "
Keep on keeping on John! You have many friends sending their love and prayers!

This was posted on COPD International : Its information from his brother.
Posted by HankO on 4/8/2009, 9:55 am, Yesterday morning, John underwent a procedure, pleurodesis, to address his now-inflated lung. The aim is to stabilize that lung for the near future. The procedure involves some lingering pain, but that's being well-managed I'm told. I'm not sure how much longer he'll be hospitalized, but I'll keep you updated. Thanks again for the support!

Thanks Bobbi; I'm somewhat familiar with that proceedure; things are DEFINITELY looking up for him. He'd been pretty stable for a lot of years and hopefully that'll continue!

I just saw another update on COPD International about John, So I carried it over. Bobbi From Hank, John is still in hospital, improving, "though not substantially," as he put it this afternoon. He's working with a physical therapist, doing a bit of walking (on 6 liters, 24/7). He will probably be shifted to a rehab facility soon for a stay of 1-2 weeks. His spirits are strong, his voice confident, and I know he values your concern and support. Don't think there will be anything else for awhile now but keep the good vibes coming.

I'm just finishing up my 11th day in the hospital, and if we can get approved I'll be going to a rehab center Tuesday to continue my recovery. Medicare will cover up to 20 days there and I might need it all. It is hard for me to believe that I'm still alive. The pneumothorax was like being hit with the worst sob I have ever experienced. In fact tha paramedic's report was correct--my O2 sat was 54. Several people here in the hospital said they'd never heard of one lower. I'll gradually report all of this as I remember it (or not). After having put the chest tube in I was offered the pleuridesis and accepted that it would be risky and painful but that not doing it would decrease the probability of a second pneumothorax from 50% to 25%. I felt that was a risk worth taking. The pain was there and in an attempt to control it post-op they gave me so much morphine that I overdosed in the middle of last Tuesday night and had to be detoxified by Narcan--a really ugly scene. Coming back from that I developed an internal bleed which made them go in yesterday with a bronchoscopy. Nohting much was found and drugs have pretty much controlled the bleeding. During all this period I haven;t been able to work much on my saturations, and they are in the toilet. They have me on 6 L of O2 24/7 and I still desat into the 80s on any effort. Hence the rehab, which hhopefully will start Wednesday. Long road ahead but it should be interesting. Stay tuned.
