Thank you all for your prayers. Lionel came thru surgery well. Although we had hoped for him to have the vent removed by now it just hasn't happened for him. He is alert alot of the time and writing us notes. His new lungs are exchanging gases very well and there is no sign of infection (as they had originally thought). The drs have told us he is doing well and to expect some setbacks and also reminded us that each patient is different and recover at their own rate. The nurses in the ICU are amazing, what special people they are!! Once things settle down i will update again.

Glad to hear he is doing well, sending lots of prayers your way. Here is a link for an awesome transplant forum, the woman who runs it is fantastic and there are a lot of great people there if you need any help or just some support from people who have been through it. www.transplantbuddies.com/

Kathy, I am so happy, I am so grateful that Lionel is doing well, how are you doing? I hope your taking care of your self too. This is a true Miracle to me, I wish you and your husband many many blessings, and that he recovers without any set backs, and most Importantly that he breathes easy forever, and you both share many sunsets, sun rises and rainbows together! ( Hugs) Love, Linndie

Just a quick update, Lionel has had a few rough days. He has had to have a some blood transfusions, and is still on the ventilator. He is pretty much unresponsive most of the time. I did get him to shake his head when i asked him if he was awake. The dr's think that he just needs more rest b4 they attempt to remove him from the ventilator. Good news is his lungs are working! Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Kathy; God love ya for checking in!
I figured Lionel was having some bumps in the road. You gotta remember though with what's he's been through and that with some of the meds he's on...... I think the intent might be to keep him a bit "low Key" for a bit shall we say.
Heck; you're right there! I don't need to tell you!
But; it's also important that YOU try to stay as rested as you can and look after yourself. You and Lionel have been a team through all of this...... The other portion of your Team is right here (after your immediate friends and family) and we're rooting for you both!

We still continue to have a few Bumps!! Lionel has been on the vent for 8 days now and the decision was made today that because of the risk of infection to remove him and to a trac instead. He has been pretty much unresponsive the last few days and when he was awake he was attacking his vent (and anything else he could reach) . The trac was put, unfortunately they had some issues with bleeding and have actually put him to sleep for the next 12 hours to give the would a chance to clot properly, which means he is on full ventilator support again. Not the best day but I have faith that tomorrow will be a better day.
Thanks so much for all your thougts and prayers they do bring much comfort. Kathy

Kathy; for as much as I'm sure they prepared you and Lionel for this, I can only imagine how difficult it must be right now. There's just some things a person can't be prepared for and lady you are showing extreme strength at a very stressful time. I think you might find that he'll settle down a bit with the tracheostomy intubation rather than the oral. Some people just don't take to it. I know I didn't; kept trying, like Lionel, to pull it out plus knawing on it with my teeth. As for the bleeding; he's undoubtedly on blood thinners which adds to the slow clotting. Let's hope that today is a BETTER one for the both of you! We'll keep you in our hearts and prayers. We'll keep the candle lit and Sarah will stay there with you both for as long as she's needed.

Kathy, thinking and praying for both of you. As I have an cousin who is an RT on the transplant floor at TGH, I know that the vent can be one of the biggest hurtles to jump. Keep the faith and make sure you take good care of yourself. Hopefully the road will become easier shortly.

Another prayer just made it's way upstairs. I can only imagine what you are feeling right now. As Jackie said, you can be prepared, but when you are in the throes of the momen it has to be so disconcerting. Keep the faith and know he is being watched over. I'm looking at the clock and seeing that he will be waking soon. I hope it will be better this time.
