. Since last July 21, my oldest son (who also had fused spine surgery 2.5 years ago) was in our local Children's hospital. He got a lung infection (re: www.medicinenet.com/staph_infection/article.htm ) in mid July and needed medical assistance to fight it. Actually, they had to install 2 drain tubes into his left lung (to drain 1L of pus) and overload his body with antibiotics. Two weeks within ICU and his entire left lung and 1/2 the right lung pulled out of their downward dive. Below is an email extract I just sent to a few of my friends. Thought I'd share the excitment with each of you as well... Many thanks for your support and full recovery prayers as well... -------------- Things must happen in 3. Seems we went from 3 weeks, to 3 days, to 3 hours, then down to 3 minutes - all within a few short days. Yes. It still amazes me that my son is now home. Once they removed his IV line, his strength and determination to leave his hospital room suddenly went vertical upwards. The nurses kept thinking his super human strength suddenly turned on. Confining him within a small room at Children's Hospital was more stress then letting him go. Thus, they let him go after tonight’s dinner – with many very strict “at home care” rules. My son is now home and restricted to “in house” and ONLY main floor traveling restrictions. Especially for the next 5 days. And, we also have a local traveling nurse who’s scheduled for 2 x daily visits (to change his bed sore dressings, record vitals and listen to his breathing). My wife & I already have his bed in our main floor living room and my wife volunteered the first night on our sofa – to be within a few feet of our son’s air mattress bed (in our living room). Already, my son has gone from the sofa chair, to his main floor bed, to the main floor washroom and back again. He’s slow but with one adult by his side and his one arm touching the walls, he eventually travels from room to room. After 5+ days, we’re hoping his legs will be strong enough for our 2nd floor stairs – into his proper 2nd floor bedroom. And, he’ll be strong enough for our back yard – for his favourite Swing Set. During the next 5+ days, his mom will be doing her “at home” nursing duties as well. And, taking care of our other kids as well. But, our oldest son is now home – which is a great feeling. It still amazes me how fast some kids “bounce” back. Especially when their IV line is removed. They seem to recover much faster then adults (with the same illness). Hopefully, our son's health continues to improves - especially within his more comfortable home environment. Many thanks for your many prayers and support. Much appreciated!!! .

My son is 16 years old with physical body size of many 12 year olds. He also has a mental disablity. Mental age is equal to many 4 year olds - which makes many daily tasks even harder as well....
Tonight, my Down Syndrome son walked down 1 flight of stairs - down into our basement Rec Room. I was below him (guiding / holding him) and it took us 5 minutes - from top to bottom. But he made it down. I'll need to carry him "up" the stairs tonight. Today, he also walked (with assistance) onto our home's attached deck, did 5 minutes of swinging on our deck's sofa chair, then back into our house. If wondering, he wasn't been outside (playing) for the last 3 weeks. His ability to perform an outside adventure today was a positive surprise as well.
You know.... Many health / normal body folks walk, swing, bend, walk up/down stairs and jog without even thinking about it. For them, its a normal day task. For my son (and his many medical recovery improvements), doing even the simplest physical living tasks is front page news. Walking down stairs or walking around the house while holding the wall with one hand and being held under his arm pit by an adult is truely amazing. Amazing to see the smile on his face (because he can now do it) and the "very proud" look on his face. Definate, pricessless moments in our lives.... My wife and I are looking forward to his full recovery improvements as well...
Many thanks for your positive support as well.... Much appreciated.

This must have been a very frightening and confusing time for your son. I am so glad he is improving. What caring and loving parents he has. I feel confident that he will have a quick recovery at this rate. Kids bounce back faster than we 'old folks'.
