. I was planning to rake my lawn this afternoon. Lost energy (must be the age thing. !!!) and didn't feel like doing it. Instead, I visited my neighbour. We often wave across our joining fence but rarely have time to chat. We're always cutting grass, chasing after balls or too busy doing repairs on our house. Today, I took the opportunity to ride my peddle bike over to their place and say "HI - how are things?". If wondering, they were both sitting in on their back deck and I drove my peddle bike down the road and around the big loop - instead of cutting across their wet lawn. When I got there, they invited me to sit on their deck as well. The husband smokes and his wife never smoked. Isn't her style. We chatted away about our family, our common friends, what's new and what's old. While in mid sentence about chatting about the old, the lady turned around and said, "hey - I noticed you quit smoking. Way to GO!!!". Her husband turned to her and said, "oh ya - he quit last Dec - I forgot to tell you". Taken by surprise, I asked how she knew. She said my fingers don't look yellow anymore, my teeth are now white and I'm not SOB from a peddle bike ride. They both gave me a giant congrats and we continued to chat away. Although he did get a few "see - if he can do it, so can you!!!" looks from his wife. After I peddled back home, I realized that non-smokers really do notice and remember who smokes and who doesn't. Unknown to smokers, others do look for confirmation signs as well. Stuff like yellow fingers, yellow teeth, gasping for air after a peddle bike ride, etc. etc. really is noticeable by others. Glad I "butted out" and plan to remain an ex-smoker the rest of my life. Just wanted to emphasis to others that "non-smokers really do notice the visable signs of a smoker. I didn't realize the signs were that noticeable". Hope this helps others - especially for the folks who are closet smokers. Don't worry. Others really do know you smoke.... .

Spike smell is the big thing with smokers. Some months after I quit (6 years ago) I was in a store and became aware of a dreadful smell, I turned round and found a smart well dressed woman behind me, she stank of stale tobacco. Only then did I realize how I must have smelt to non smokers.

Isn't it amazing how we don't smell it until we quit? I was shocked.
