www.ageconcern.org.uk:80/AgeConcern/News_MoreInfo.asp?Articleid=18206538&titleID=Sarcopenia+could+spur+on+COPD+(10.07.07)New figures have revealed that millions of older people could be at risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to the prevalence of sarcopenia. The age-related muscle loss condition is one of the hidden contributors to COPD and studies in the US have shown that it may affect up to 40 per cent of its citizens over the age of 80, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. A spokesperson for the University of Florida asserted that sarcopenia is a major health concern in North America and will acquire a high profile as treatment costs rise. Meanwhile, Dr Michael Whitehurst from Florida Atlantic University suggested that regular exercise could help prevent the onset of muscle mass loss. Among the global leaders marketing treatments for COPD is research driven Boehringer Ingelheim, which offers the Spiriva Handihaler to individuals with respiratory conditions such as bronchitis.
