On a different COPD forum, I posted that I wanted to peddle bike or walk to the next village over, have a litte drink in their rest area, then walk or bike ride back. Approx 3 weeks ago, my son and I did this village to village trip. We both peddle biked his friend home, and my son & I peddled back. A fast trip (too fast) that he had to completed before sunset.
Today, my wife and kids were "at the movies". This morning's rain cleared and the sun finally came out - by early afternoon. A good day to see if I can make my dream come true again. After all, it was Sunday and Sunday is "day of rest - or making one's dream come true. So, I decided to "peddle the distance" - again. Just me and my peddle bike - with nobody else pushing me. For today's round trip, I took my sweet time. Stopped off at our local GM used car dealer, got a drink at their local variety store, walked 2 blocks back onto the bike trail, stopped off a my local Ford Dealer, then looped over 1 block and seen the campers in the RV dealer. Then looped around a few streets, dropped by my local cop shop (good thing I had my peddle bike helmet on), then back onto the bike trail. Round trip (the long way around) probably took me close to 4 hours to complete. At times, turtles (running in 1st gear) could have passed me on some parts of the bike trail but hey, I wasn't in a rush. It was Sunday - day of rest.
If I would have ben smoking (like 6 months ago) and tried this village / village peddle bike trip, I would have heaved up a lung. And would have heaved up a lung on its ride back. By "butting out" last Dec 2nd, I was able to do this round trip, and still have physical energy left over. Left over to play some basket ball hoops with my disabled son - in our driveway (when I returned home).
If you have a dream, a dream that is possible, do focus towards your dream every day. For me, I walk every night. Walk around the block, walk to our local school and if possible, go for a little scooter ride with my kids after dinner. Thus, building my "ability" to handle a long distance village to village peddle bike ride. If you have a do-able dream, do work your way towards that dream. Reaching one's dream is well worth it. Especially the 2nd time - like I did today.
Hope this post inspires others. Especially others who feel their reach-able dream isn't possible. Isn't possible because somebody said "you can never do it". Just like my one neighbour last fall told me that I was "too fat" to do my village / village peddle bike ride. You can prove others wrong was well... Hope this post gives you more fuel to help reach your dreams...
