21 Aug 07 Patients with COPD should be screened for the obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS), researchers say. The screening call comes from Greek researchers who surveyed 1501 patients with COPD (confirmed by a respiratory physician) and found that COPD patients were twice as likely to present with daytime sleepiness, and were also more likely than non-COPD patients to present with frequent snoring and pauses in their breathing. The researchers found no link in patients with asthma. They conclude: ‘The increased likelihood of OSAHS related symptoms in COPD patients in contrast with asthmatic patients designates them as another target group for the screening of OSAHS in the primary care setting.’ Primary Care Respiratory Journal 2007; :222-228. -------------------------------------------- I know I often awake gasping for air

Larry,
I have this and use a Vpap at night. I find I do wake not as sleepy or tired as I was before. And although I am now permitted to sleep once in a while without the machine as a treat my RT Tina calls it. I have to increase the o2 by one liter and I find I don't feel as well the next day. The other thing I like about it. Once I put the mask on I fall to sleep fast no tossing and turning. And to me the first breath putting the mask on is like the first real good breath I get all day. So I would say the pressure it adds to inflate the lungs is very much a plus for COPDer's.

It would be interesting to get a screening, but I don't think I could sleep for one minute wired up like that.
