Rosemarie; I think the fact that it is getting a lot more attention now is because the radar screen is showing a far bigger blip. Those of us that are coping with COPD are speaking out more and demanding that our medical professionals and government officials get off their behinds and recognize the fact that smoking is decreasing and lung disease is increasing. WHY??? bear.

Re: Bear's statement of "the fact that smoking is decreasing and lung disease is increasing. WHY???"--You are right and this is very interesting. They can't blame it all on second hand smoke. I know there are so man environmental issues going on and I would bet my last dollar that the answer lies in "follow the dollar", ie: money. Who is making the most money off lung disease, therefore the causes aren't being addressed. I do agree that the only reason copd is getting more attention now is the higher fatality rate and increasing health costs....Joyce

How about these reasons for more COPD being more common now: 1) The population of our sort of age had a huge sort bulge (no! I don't mean our waistlines - I mean the "baby boomers". 2) COPD is age related and usually doesn't show up until 55 or older (I trust the Alpha's here will forgive me, but I did include the word 'usually'!) 3) The medical profession are more often diagnosing COPD as a disease in itself rather than "you have a bad cough and wheezing because you are getting old and you smoked - here, have some pennicillin" and two weeks later, when the cough hasn't gone, "OK, we'll try some prednisone" 4) We have more pollution - not just in the towns and cities, but also on the farms with mechanization raising more grain dust and use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. That makes sense Chris. Joyce you bet it follows the money trail everything does. And yes bear we are making them more aware. But, by golly I agree with Joyce the most. Yes baby boomers yes to all of it. But once again MONEY
Like I have always heard: "MONEY TALKS AND BULL DUST WALKS"
Happy Trails

Profits over people is wrong. People over profits is right. It really boggles my mind that the big tobacco companies knew exactly what their product was doing and when the ka-ka started to hit the fan they knew people would need drugs to help them so they bought into or took over the drug industry. They make money on making you sick and feeding your addiction, then they make more money by trying to keep you alive with drugs. They are smart. Also they have the lobby group to pressure the government to keep the status quo. So there is little funding for research finding a cure for COPD.

I think you're right Linda.....can you imagine if it was ever possible to find a cure for the common cold what that would do to pharmaceutical companies and stocks ?
