I was on Combivent 3 puffs 4 times a day as I did not do well on Spiriva. Now with Combivent being discontinued, my specialist has switched me to Atrovent 4 puffs 4 times a day. I just started it this week and find I'm not doing as well on it. It also tastes and smells horrible I also take ventolin as needed which I find I'm using more of. I know that Combivent was made up of Ventolin and Atrovent. I'm not sure whether I should panic or maybe I just need more time on this. Toni

Toni -- If the Atrovent is not working as well as the Combivent, it can only be the lack of albuterol. Of course you will have to use more albuterol to make up for the amount missing in the Atrovent. The reason you are probably not doing as well is you are probably getting the new HFA inhaler and quite a few folks have had problems with them not working as well.
Perhaps another shot at Spiriva is in the cards for you. Some folks must give it more time than others, but, if it does work for you, it will be so far superior to either Combivent or Atrovent as to be not even comparable. Why not give ADC's Tiova a trial. If you order other things from them, just tack on a 30-day supply of Tiova, it's relatively cheap. -- Vic

Vic
Thanks for your comments. I'm going to speak with the wonderful ladies at my respiratory rehab program tomorrow when I go to exercise. Maybe they can help me with the dosage.
I had thought about trying Spiriva again...maybe now's the time.
I'm not sure what ADC'S Tiova is?? I live in Canada is that why?

Toni it took ages before spiriva worked for me, give it another go. The new albuterol is not good (for me), we had a big stink about it in New Zealand and got the old one back as an option while they sort it.

Toni -- Tiova is simply ADC's generic version of Spiriva and it costs less than $10 for a 30-day supply. I imagine if you live in Canada, you don't really have a problem with the high price that we have to pay in the States. -- Vic

Toni; I am almost positive that you are using the HFA Atrovent. I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean. IT IS AWFUL. I have tried numerous albuterols with the new HFA and none are as bad as that Atrovent. I was going to join in a study/trial and was all cleared. I had to stop my Spiriva and use Atrovent and I finally just dropped out. The changes in my meds were too much as I am severe stage. I could not handle that Atrovent. Awful, awful. I am buying the Ventolin from Inhousepharmacy because I cannot get anything that good in the States. I am in the USA. I don't have drug coverage. It is not as bad as the ones that have Ethanol in them. www.inhousepharmacy.com/asthma-allergy/ventolin.htmlI have more information I can post if interested in some of the choices. Let me know. I am just breezing thru here on my way to a nap. Been busy morning. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks guys for responding to toni's query. toni; even some folks in Canada purchase via ADC. Go here www.copdcanada.ca/med_names_equiv.htm Near the bottom under :Note to the Reader you'll see a link. If you have any questions or problems you can post them here about it. Many on the net are familiar with ADC and purchase their meds through them.

Toni; I just had one more thought on this that might help. If you do not use a spacer with your Inhalers, try it. Using a spacer I guess helps to cut down the bad taste some too.
Spacers are really recommended whenever possible.
