This is an inspiring story of a man who recently received new lungs. I learned something from it that I didn't, but should have , known. Your new lungs have to come from someone about the same size as you. How could I not have considered this...mine would have to come from a child. Anyway, I hope this man continues to do well. www.theledger.com/article/20101125/NEWS/101129643/1410?p=1&tc=pg

Sue, Lungs don't have to come from same size..but they must be small enough for the cavity of the recipient. I am assuming you are small in stature and have a small cavity, I have a very large cavity (expanded from the COPD lungs). Pre transplant my lungs were 37% larger than standard. My transplanted lung (the left lung) was very small and looks a little out of place on xrays. The article was very well done for the individual circumstance but does not apply to all transplants. Jim

JImmy, I guess my lung cavity is quite a big bigger than it should be, even more than it was a few months ago. You give me more hope.

When I was going through transplant evaluation, it was discussed in depth the size of lungs I would need. I was actually quite shocked. The first thing, and this was just sheer dumb vanity is that with new lungs, the structural changes in my rib cage wouldn't change. The other was the size of lungs I would need. I thought essentially, I'm 5'7 and therefore, I would need lungs for a 5'7 person. Ah....no! In fact, because of the size of my ribcage, they would be looking for a person between 6' and 6'3. WOW! Scary!

Wow, Shellley! Just....wow! Too bad they can't take out a few ribs during the transplant to fix that 'problem', . Seriously, I know we're not happy with the new look of our body, but to be able to breathe again 'normally' would be just heavenly and I suppose the big lungs will suit me just fine if I ever get some. Now, if the big belly would go away.......

Susan - My donor was supposed to be between 5'3" and 5'7". Turns out, he was over 6'. They removed the center lobe and only transplanted the upper and lower, which made it small enough to fit. Before my surgery, I'd had no idea that they could do that!
