Most of us are out of breath when climbing stairs. A very helpful hint they taught at my rehab clinic was this. At the very bottom of the stairway, before you even start, take a few deep breaths. Most people now take a deep breath and start climbing. No. No. No. I was taught to do the exact opposite. Phil, would be very proud of this next piece of advice, exhale dammit. Do the very reverse of what you would normally do. Exhale as much air as you can, then take 3 steps and three only, then stop. Take a big breath in and exhale again. Then do another three steps only and then stop. Take a big breath in and exhale again. Repeat until the stairs are climbed and you will be at the top and will not be out of breath. You will not be afraid of climbing stairs any more just remember to breathe as suggested. Hugz, as ever, bear. ;D ;D

Bear, Great advice on the stairs. I will certainly start this technique. I have three levels to my home. I was okay as long as I took it slow back in May, however, I have gotten worse and now fear the stairs ( ).

Hi Aero63; Maybe in time you will get around a little better again. Don't know if you are new to COPD or how knowledgeable you are. If new, there are things to do to help get around. You can let us know. I wanted to suggest you read what Phil wrote about breathing which is on this forum and this link will get you there. philns.proboards46.com/index.cgi?board=newbies&action=display&thread=1175015102Phil passed away last June but he is not forgotten for all he left many. Best of luck. BTW, I couldn't walk one flight of stairs.
