Hi, My name is Corrie, I have COPD. I have asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, plus I have diabetes. My heartbeat is unstable, and shortness of breath, fatigue and head-aches plus coughing up phlegm are the order of my day. My household activities are mostly in the morning when I feel best. Bending brings shortness of breath and so do daily activities, I also found that being anxious or upset activates that and that my emotions are really getting the better of me sometimes. I am having an interview for pulmonary rehabilitation program the end of this month and it will be held 2 afternoons a week for a period of 12 weeks. I am happy to be able to enroll in that, as I am anxious to find out as much about this disease as I can, I already put a folder together with all the info from this website and the Canadian Lung society, got information send to me also plus a free video. I find there is lots of help around, created my support team which is helpful just to look at the names and know I can call these people at any time and they are there for me. This is a short report about my disease. Let me tell you something about myself. I am a woman, 63 years old, was born with Asthma and chronic bronchitis, so I must have had this disease much longer than I just found out, (a month ago) the emphysema set in about 2 years ago. I live in Bobcaygeon Ontario, we moved here 7 years ago when my husband had his voice box removed because of throat cancer, (he has a clean bill of health now, thank God), but we went into early retirement and love it here. We live in a bungalow right by Pigeon Lake. I have 3 daughters, and we are very close. We used to live in Toronto, where the girls were born also, my oldest still lives there, the middle one lives in Peterborough, half an hour from here and the youngest in Pickering, 1 1/2 hour drive, Toronto is 2 1/2 hour drive. We visit regularly and they all know now about my disease, I had a hard time telling them, but I know that with exercise, good diet, and using my energy in a positive way and conserve it (looking so much forward to that 12 week program) that I can keep this disease at a slow pace from getting worse. So I am very positive, and hang on to that when I feel depressed, scared or anxious at times, that all passes quick because I am not that way. I have always been an optimist and have problems with those feelings, they are not me. So yes, I take all the support and understanding plus advice I can get and hope to do the same for others who are having this disease. It sure makes you appreciate life much more and I am looking forward to my daily walks when the weather gets better, right now I join an exercise class once a week. I am also using the breathing exercises for shortness of breath and coughing, and it helps. that is it for now, I hope this was not too long.
