Why don't you join this forum Debbie. Lots of great people here for support. And a lot of questions can be answered.

Hi Deb; Well; you've already broken the ice with a post and Barb's right. Join up and continue to jump right in. The folks here come from all over and you'll be made to feel right at home I guarantee it! In the interim, I've taken the liberty of adding Ft McMurray to the title of your post.... Perhaps that'll help a bit.

Hi Debbie. I know there are people in Ft. McMurray with COPD but most are silent about their problem. If you tried I'll bet the RT at the hospital would help you get a group going. They could at least put up a sign for a meeting or give your phone number to some of their patients. Maybe there is a group already? Try calling the hospital or Alberta Health Services. Your doctor's office may have some info as well. In any case...we are here. We're a pretty good bunch of folks all willing to help. They sure have helped me with this COPD stuff. We'd be glad to have you aboard.

Hi Debbie! I know what you mean about needing someone to talk to with COPD. But it's almost impossible to meet someone unless you have a connection somehow, ie rehab, a support group, or a forum. Where I live there is no rehab or support group, but I have met some wonderful people here in this Forum. Like Blossom said, they come from all over and you just might meet someone who lives close by. Otherwise, you will meet great support here, good friends, and lots of information. Some of the members have even crossed country borders to meet with each other. We don't just talk about COPD as the illness, but also how our lives are affected by having it.
So, join up and tell us about yourself, you would be most welcome!!!
Sue

Debbie, I know how hard it can be to have COPD in a cold northern climate. Members have made some excellent suggestions and I personally have found this forum to be absolutely invaluable. One other suggestion would be to check with the lung association. They often have links to community groups and some of their members may be COPD patients. www.ab.lung.ca is the link to the Alberta Lung Association. It might be worth contacting them? If you do check the posts At the Back Fence daily, you'll see a lot of people posting their daily concerns, issues, and hopes as we meet the challenge of living with COPD. There are also lots of good links to information on the main copd canada website. Good luck and I hope you will use these boards to find some virtual support until you can find some in your community. Deborah (living in Whitehorse as you can see)

Ft. McMurray used to have a respiratory rehab program back in 2006, but I am not sure if it is still available. It was a good place to meet other patients. As far as I know, there isn't much up here now, but maybe I'm just out of touch.
